For World No.1 Luke Donald it will be like deja vu when he tees off at 9.20 on Thursday in The Open Championship at Royal St Georges. One of his playing partners will be Sergio Garcia, with whom he played in 2003 in the first round, alongside Tiger Woods. That year Woods flew his ball into deep rough on the right of the first hole. It wasn’t found within the time limit and Woods eventually took seven.
Donald will be hoping it doesn’t happen to him on the toughened course as he sets out alongside the Spaniard and Japanese wonderkid Ryo Ishikawa.
Other prominent groups include US Open winner Rory McIlroy with Rickie Fowler and Ernie Els and defending champion Louis Oosthuizen with Martin Kaymer and Phil Mickelson.
Donald, who shot his lowest European Tour round of 63 during the Scottish Open, said Royal St George’s would prove a very tough, and unpredictable, test.
And while he said that becoming the world’s top-ranked golfer earlier this year was a “good achievement”, a victory at a major tournament would complete a boyhood dream.
“I’ve always wanted to win a major since I turned pro,” Donald said, “even before that when I was growing up and watching some of my idols. Scotty Cameron Putter
